I am the father of two foster/adopt special needs children who struggled last year with the mask mandates. It was particularly difficult on one of my children who despite having written direction from his physician received no support or empathy from either his school or the District. The District refused to honor the Doctor’s medical mask exemption and tried to force my son to wear the mask despite the fact that mask wearing had repeatedly caused him debilitating, 4-day long migraine headaches. After much intense discussion I reluctantly agreed that both boys could wear face-shields instead of masks. Later in the year the school added cloth around their face-shields, despite their doctors notes exempting both boys. I was outraged. They defied the doctors orders as well as my strongly written emails stating that my boys were to not wear cloth. This continued for at least three days in a row before I finally got them to stop. These poor kids were also only allowed to attend classes if they were seated in plastic cages at the back of the classroom... with face-shields mandated to be on while seated in their cages. Seriously. This was mandated despite the fact that there was an IEP for one of them requiring him to be able to be seated in the front.
This 2021-2022 year the district is requiring all children to wear masks again with no scientific basis or data to back this up. I follow the science closely every day and masks simply do not work. They only hurt kids not help them. It is still unclear if the District will accept the face-shields yet. These boys cannot go through another year sitting in a plastic cage in the back of the class. Our children cannot understand their teachers, have had their identities taken away from them, suffer from constant mask-shaming and peer pressure, and risk permanent psychological damage from the absence of facial expressions and human connections that masks impose.
Last spring my son had a severe accident resulting in a broken skull, broken face, and broken jaw socket that resulted in us spending over a month in the PICU. Considering that he had previously suffered 4-day long severe migraines (caused by mask wearing) before the accident, the doctors became very concerned how bad these migraines might become after having his head shattered. The doctors forbid my son to wear a mask at any time for his safety. Upon his return to school last June he was still asked to wear a face-shield though regardless of the fact that the side of his skull was broken and pushed inward 2mm.
On August 23rd, 2021, within 15 minutes of the start of the meeting, the school board walked out on myself and over 100 other parents and citizens that were there to speak. They also announced that all future school board meetings would be switched to virtual, Zoom meetings. This is what they did last year and it resulted in people not being allowed to speak. This is inexcusable and illegal. Did they forget that they work for us?! It was then that I realized I wasn’t the only parent with negative experiences like this. Faced with what appears to be no end to this madness, I decided to run for CVSD Position 2 as a write-in candidate and I’m asking for your support. I am a Constitutional conservative; I am against both CRT and the State’s Sex Ed curriculum and I pledge to fight every day for our children and parents.
